Cheerfully Helping Others

The following is my weekly letter to the Bishop Chatard parent community:

I received the following e-mail from a woman with no apparent connection to Bishop Chatard. It speaks well to the community we strive to inspire and nurture each day.

“I just wanted to tell you about my experience with a Bishop Chatard boy last Thursday evening. It was after 8:00 p.m. and the grocery parking lot was dark. I had finished shopping, and I was walking to my car with a very full shopping cart. As I started putting bags into my car, I noticed a young man watching me from the car next to me. In a matter of seconds, he was out of his car and walking toward me. To be honest, I was scared at first. But he smiled and asked if he could help me put the items in my car.  He immediately began unloading my shopping cart and within minutes all my purchases were in the car.

The young man said he was a student at Bishop Chatard. He was waiting in the car while his mom ran in to the store quickly. He said he felt bad just sitting in his car while I was unloading the shopping cart by myself – so he wanted to help! I thanked him and told him his mother raised him properly and that his school would be proud of how he represented them.

Every time I hear “Bishop Chatard” I will remember that young man and his gift of cheerfully helping others. Your school and the young man’s family must certainly place an emphasis on service to others – that was clearly seen last Thursday night.

Unfortunately I did not learn the young man’s name before I left that evening. However, his actions will never be forgotten. Our society desperately needs more young people like this!”

We certainly are proud of how this young man represented the school. And do you want to know something? If I were to ask the faculty and staff who they think this young man was, I would get many different answers – indicating that any number of our students would likely have responded the same way!

Thank you for your support and your assistance in sending more Bishop Chatard students, like our nameless young man, out into the world!
