Keep Warmth and Peace Alive in Your Heart

January 3, 2018

See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. (1 John 2:29-3:6)

Each time I read Scripture, I try do two things: Reflect on what the scripture passage is saying to me and consider what the scripture passage is asking of me. The ‘me’ part is important. I believe Scripture is personal and has an unique message for each of us.

As I looked over today’s readings, the scripture passage cited above kept jumping out at me.

What is the passage saying to me? It is saying, “You are blessed. You are fortunate to have been given so much in your life.” This thought resonates with me, especially this time of year, when I have the opportunity to spend time with my family. The “love the Father has bestowed” on me is never more alive and more clear than when we share time as a family. The hugs and “I-love-you’s” we exchange are the outward signs of the Father’s love, but present also are the warmth and peace I feel in my heart.

What is the passage asking of me? I believe it is asking two things of me. First, it is asking me to keep those feelings of warmth and peace alive in my heart – don’t allow them to escape simply because “family time” is over for now. My children left, the Father’s love for me has not.

Second, it is asking me to take this warmth and peace out into the world. “Children of God” have that obligation. When I do this, I become the instrument by which God’s peace and love are bestowed on others.
