I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.
But when he comes, the Spirit of truth,
he will guide you to all truth. (John 16:12-13)
I think of this passage during times of suffering. When suffering, we inevitably go to God with the question, “Why, God? Why is this happening?” or perhaps “Why are You allowing this to happen?”
This type of approach, this need to know why, will likely only add to our suffering. We cannot know the mind of God, and are not meant to fully comprehend His plan.
That is why Jesus tried to soften the blow for His disciples. He hinted at His suffering and death, but did not tell them everything, saying only, “…you cannot bear it now.”
Don’t add to your suffering by digging for the why. Rather, trust in God – in His will for you and in His plan. We may never fully understand while on this earth, but will eventually be “guided to all truth” in eternal life.
