Therefore, gird your loins…and set your hopes completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:10-16)
Apparently the “I want the Kingdom, but not the Church” philosophy was alive even in the Church’s infancy. In today’s first reading Peter writes about the need to “gird your loins” if you want to follow Jesus Christ and hold out hope for eternal life.
This is not an expression that has stood the test of time. What Peter was saying was, “You need to be prepared to take on a difficult task. The road you seek to take is not easy – be ready to work.” In today’s vernacular, we might say, “suck it up” or “roll up your sleeves and get after it.”
Too many of us want heaven on our own terms. Unfortunately, we may find ourselves on the outside looking in come Judgment Day.
What we need is some good old-fashioned loin girding.
