“He stepped forward and touched the coffin; at this the bearers halted, and he said, “Young man, I tell you, arise!” The dead man sat up and began to speak…” (Luke 7:11-17)
Often we hear about the miracles performed by Jesus, and go no further than that. We accept them as simply another miracle story intended to show the power and the divinity of Jesus. Certainly the stories accomplish that, but I believe we are intended to probe deeper into Scripture and reflect upon its meaning for us today.
So how about this? Have you allowed your relationship with Jesus to fade away as more and more “stuff” occupies your time? Have you become apathetic when it comes to prayer and service and love of neighbor? Is your faith dead?
Today Jesus is touching your coffin. He is saying to you, “Arise!” He hopes, like the dead man in the Gospel, that you will get up and begin to speak, and in so doing be renewed in your faith.
