November 2, 2018 – All Souls Day
On All Souls Day, we pray for the souls of the faithful departed. We remember in a special way those friends and loved ones those who have died in the past year.
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1032): This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: “Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.” From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.
Just as Jesus died and rose again, so will the Father bring with Him those who have died with Jesus. Just as in Adam all men die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
God our Father, we ask that you hear our prayers and bring us some consolation in our lives. As we remember in our prayers all of our loved ones who have died, we pray that they will have received the promise of eternal life and that they are with you in experiencing the joy of heaven.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
