Humility Defined

November 3, 2018

For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted. (Luke 14:7-14)

Humility is the ability to look in the mirror and be honest about what we see. It is the ability to see our limitations and have a realistic view of who we are.

Being honest means not building ourselves up into something we are not, but it also means not tearing ourselves down. When we honestly face our limitations, we open ourselves up to the possibility of accepting help from others. That is a good thing, not something that damages our self-esteem.

Humility does not mean hiding the gifts that we have or attempting to convince ourselves that we are worthless. Humility, and the honesty it engenders, is empowering.
