Take Up Your Cross

November 7, 2018

Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:25-33)

We try not to show our vulnerability to too many people. Most people don’t want to see our weaknesses or hear our struggles. It’s messy and people don’t like messy. Phrases like “put your best foot forward” and “never let ’em see you sweat” come to mind.

Not so with Jesus. He’s OK with our worst foot and He is fine with our sweat. He is not only willing to take on our messiness, He demands that we bring it to Him. He tells us it is a prerequisite for being a disciple. If we try to pretend that we don’t have any problems, we are being dishonest.

So take up your cross — throw it over your shoulder, drag it, or push it. Better yet, ask Jesus to help you carry it. Jesus doesn’t mind getting messy.
