Jesus turned and saw them following Him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” (John 1:35-42)
Whenever I hear this Gospel, I picture the painting Carol gave me for Christmas a few years ago (shown below).
It took her some time to finish the painting, as she struggled to get the eyes “just right.” What she captured on canvas was a powerful image of the piercing eyes of Jesus.
I wonder if this is the look He gave His future disciples when He asked them, “What are you looking for?” A look that could be translated as, “Do you have what it takes to follow me?” A piercing look that warns them that it won’t be easy.
What are you looking for? Are you looking for a free ride…smooth sailing…a life of leisure? Perhaps following Jesus is not for you.
Are you looking for a challenging life that will lead to eternal happiness? Are you looking for a life that requires sacrifice and service? One that asks you to live the Gospel message each day?
If so, He invites you to follow Him.
