A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter…(Sirach 6:5-17)
Today’s reading from Sirach details the attributes of a friend. We are told a faithful friend is a sturdy shelter.
Faithful: Dependable, steadfast, unwavering
Sturdy shelter: Protective, solid, secure
Some people are uncomfortable thinking of God as their friend, as approachable and present in their lives. They feel unworthy of such a gift. It is easier for them to think of God as some Being who is “out there somewhere.”
Today’s reading gently sends us the message that, whether we are worthy or not, God is our faithful friend. As such, He is our sturdy shelter – protecting us and keeping us safe.
You praise Him when you accept His friendship.
