“Fear not, Abram! I am your shield” (Genesis 15:1-12)
Over and over again, throughout Scripture, God sends us a consistent message: “Trust me.” And we do a pretty good job of that, as long as things are going our way. But it seems like as soon as things get tough, we want to take things into our own hands.
Isn’t it strange that when we need God the most, we rely on Him the least?
It is an interesting phenomenon. We don’t want to stress or worry. It would certainly be much easier to turn things over to God. No more restless nights. No more upset stomach or tears of hopelessness. Yet we cannot seem to give up control.
When I think back on the some the low points in my life, invariably they were the times that I was furthest away from God. I was so busy trying to handle everything on my own that I forgot that God was right there, waiting to share the load, to protect us from ourselves…to be our shield.
