When they take you before synagogues and before rulers and authorities, do not worry about how or what your defense will be or about what you are to say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say. (Luke 12:8-12)
We are always told that scripture has something to say to us today, regardless of the time period during which it was written. The gospel passage above is part of the instructions Jesus was giving to his disciples. He asks us to evangelize in the same way.
Obviously, we will not likely need to concern ourselves with the possible fallout from going before synagogues and before rulers and authorities.
We are, however, called to share our faith – to evangelize by speaking openly about our faith and living a life that allows others to know our faith. Most of us understand our obligation to live a good life, and do our best to do that. However, we may struggle with the speak openly portion of our obligation. Who are we to tell others about faith?
Jesus’ words speak directly to that concern – the Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say. These words are just as applicable to us are they were to the disciples of Jesus’ time.
Speak from the heart of your faith, and the Holy Spirit will provide the words.
