Assistant Shepherds

December 10, 2019

If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray? In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost.” (Matthew 18:12-14)

The message of today’s gospel seems pretty clear – God loves us always and unconditionally. If we feel lost or are lost, He will work to bring us home again. He is the Good Shepherd and will always come after one of His sheep that have strayed.

If He was literally a shepherd and we were actually sheep, that would be the end of the story.

But we’re not sheep. We are Christian human beings; we are responsible for one another. That means God is not the only one going after strays. The gospel says, “…it is not the will of your heavenly Father that anyone (one of these little ones) be lost.” As Christians, our goal is to do the will of God. It is our responsibility to help bring back the strays.

If you are the the one that has strayed, that should bring you comfort. If you are one of the ninety-nine, that should call you to action.
