Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.” (Matthew 1:18-25)
Joseph is a quiet, behind-the-scenes force that is often overlooked in the Christmas season. Mary changed the course of history when she said, “Yes.”
Joseph, too, gave a powerful, “Yes.” Despite his fear, he trusted the message of the angel of the Lord. He didn’t have all of the answers, and was unsure of all that was in store for him, but he said, “Yes” and stepped up to the challenge.
Joseph stands as a wonderful example to us as someone who trusted in God, showed courage and integrity, and never wavered in carrying out the work to which he was called.
