But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…(Matthew 5:44)
Easy for you to say, Jesus, you’re God! But for us human beings, this particular teaching is a pretty tall order.
Today’s Gospel passage challenges us – are we all in? Anyone can do the minimum, we are told; but can we go the distance? Love our friends and pray for them? Sure, anyone can do that. But can we challenge yourselves to do more? Can we love your enemies and pray for them?
The Gospel passage ends with, “So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Certainly that is a goal for all of us. God does not expect us to simply arrive at perfection, but He does expect us to be continually working toward it. He does expect us to challenge ourselves.
He does want us to be all in.
