“The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (Matthew 23:12)
The Church emphasizes prayer, fasting, and almsgiving during Lent. These things cause us to think beyond ourselves, to consider the needs of others. They are also sacrificial – when we do these things we offer up a piece of ourselves.
The Lenten season is all about humility.
We are not called to serve in order to benefit ourselves, but humble service to others does come with its own reward. At the end of the sacrificial Lenten season, Easter awaits us. Resurrection and a new, eternal life. That should be motivation enough for those humble servants who answer the call to love God and love others.
