“I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” (Matthew 12:1-8)
Do you ever find yourself getting so caught up in a “process” that you lose sight of the ultimate goal?
A Dad asked his young son to help him work on the family car so that they could have some quality father-son time. In the process of working on the car, the son handed him the wrong tool or seemed disinterested, so Dad got upset with him and an argument ensued. What happened to the goal of some “quality” father-son time?
We often do this with our faith process. We follow all of the “rules”: We go to Mass on Sundays (we even stay until the final song is over); we don’t eat meat on Fridays in Lent; we go to Reconciliation twice per year; and we put our envelope in the collection basket.
But how do we treat one another? Are we compassionate and loving? Do we forgive those who have hurt us? Are we open to those who are different from us? Do we reach out to those in need?
I am sure God appreciates all of the effort expended in following the rules (sacrifice). But it is all for naught if you miss out on the goal God had in mind: Love Him with all your heart, and love others as yourself (mercy).
