The Powerful Work of the Spirit

December 16, 2020

And Jesus said to them in reply,
“Go and tell John what you have seen and heard:
the blind regain their sight,
the lame walk,
lepers are cleansed,
the deaf hear, the dead are raised,
the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.
  (Luke 7:18-23)

From his prison cell, John the Baptist sent two of his disciples to Jesus to ask him, “Are you the one I have been preaching about? Are you the ‘one who is to come’?

Jesus sent John an answer, but it was not a simple “Yes!” declaration. He instead, by listing what he was capable of doing, painted a picture of a world in which God’s spirit was powerfully at work. This image was intended to encourage John while in prison, to strengthen both his heart and his resolve.

We may find ourselves questioning Jesus at times. We cry out to Him, “It is really you, Jesus? Are you here with me?”

As with John the Baptist, Jesus does not give us a simple, “Yes, I’m here.” He instead wants to give us strength of heart by pointing our attention to where the Spirit is powerfully at work in our lives. “Just look around,”he tells us.
