Each day during Lent, I am highlighting a Lenten Word (or phrase) of the Day from the readings of the day. I encourage you to reflect on this word or phrase and incorporate it in your prayers today.
Therefore, I say to you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit. (Matthew 21:45)
PRODUCE FRUIT: God has given each of us free will. It can be a double-edged sword. Free will allows us to use the gifts we have been given to glorify God in service to others, to produce the fruit of the Kingdom of God. However, free will also affords us the freedom to choose to go our own way, to use our God-given gifts to serve our own needs, to live a life of selfishness and sin – which produces no fruit. Free will allows us to choose.
However, Jesus cautions us to choose wisely. God intends for us to use his gifts to bear fruit, to build up the Kingdom. Should we choose not to do that, those gifts can just as easily be taken away. Remember the adage, “Use it or lose it.”
Reflect today on how you use the many gifts God has bestowed on you. Pray for the courage to make good decisions on how best to use those gifts. What fruits are you producing?
