Refuge

March 20, 2021

Each day during Lent, I am highlighting a Lenten Word (or phrase) of the Day from the readings of the day. I encourage you to reflect on this word or phrase and incorporate it in your prayers today.

O Lord, my God, in you I take refuge. (from Psalm 7)

REFUGE: I chose a word from today’s Responsorial Psalm upon which to reflect.

Refuge is a place of safety, a shelter. God offers us refuge. So much of our ongoing anxiety is caused by uncertainty and risk. Many things call out to us: “Come this way!” Temptation tries to lure us; promises of wealth or power wave us toward them; things that are newer, bigger, or better beckon us. We often heed those calls only to find they leave us empty and unfulfilled, perhaps even damaged. These are all false idols.

God calls out to us as well, “Come this way!”

There is no uncertainty with God; his love for us is unconditional and endless. There is no risk with God, only upside. In the chaos, confusion, and noise of this world, God is our refuge – a safe place to lay our head.

For your Lenten prayer, ask God to clear the distractions from your life, so the only voice we hear is his.
