Each day during Lent, I am highlighting a Lenten Word (or phrase) of the Day from the readings of the day. I encourage you to reflect on this word or phrase and incorporate it in your prayers today.
Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.” (John 8:11)
NEITHER DO I CONDEMN YOU: I find these words from Jesus quite comforting. Many people have an image of God as one to be feared, one that stands in harsh judgment, waiting eagerly for us to sin so he can apply the appropriate punishment. To be honest, that was the image of God I had growing up.
Thankfully, I know now that God does not participate in an ongoing game of “Gotcha!” Just the opposite is true. God loves us and is our biggest cheerleader. He not only wants us to succeed in living a good and fruitful life, he provides everything we need to make it possible.
Several things to hold in your heart as you pray today: You are loved beyond measure. Regardless of what you may have done or what sins you have committed, God does not condemn you. You are not too far gone. There is NOTHING you could ever do to make God love you less.
