Each day, I reflect upon a word or a phrase from the readings of the day. I encourage you to do the same and perhaps incorporate that word or phrase into your daily prayer.
“Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” (Matthew 8:18-22)
I WILL FOLLOW YOU: The easy response for Jesus would have been, “Great! Welcome aboard, new disciple!”
Jesus, however, wanted to be clear about what it meant to follow Him. It was not going to be easy. There would be challenges along the way and many who would persecute the disciples of Jesus.
The salvation Jesus promised was not of this world. He was attempting to tell this eager new disciple, “It’s great that you are drawn to the hope of eternal salvation, but know that there is a price to pay. If you understand that and can withstand the challenges, follow Me.”
Jesus sends us this same message. The ways of the world are easy. Following Jesus can be the tougher road, but well worth the journey.
