Each day, I reflect upon a word or a phrase from the readings of the day. I encourage you to do the same and perhaps incorporate that word or phrase into your daily prayer.
“Praise the Lord, for he is good; for his mercy endures forever…” (Psalm 136:1)
HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER: What does today’s Responsorial Psalm mean? Does it mean once we’ve been forgiven, we’re “good to go”? Have we been given a blank check to sin at will, knowing God’s mercy endures forever, that there is no expiration date?
God’s mercy goes hand in hand with his compassion. He is forgiving, AND understands that we are imperfect beings. He wants us to strive for perfection, yet recognizes our human weakness.
So what does “his mercy endures forever” mean? It means his mercy is always available. He will not turn his back on us. This should be particularly comforting for those who battle a particular sin, who repeat that sin over and over. There is hope! God’s love, compassion, AND MERCY endure forever.
For our part, we must SEEK that mercy. We must humble ourselves and turn to him in our sinfulness. We can do that with confidence, for we know his mercy is always available…it endures forever.
