Teach You and Lead You

December 10, 2021

Each day, I reflect upon a word or a phrase from the readings of the day. I encourage you to do the same and perhaps incorporate that word or phrase into your daily prayer.

I, the LORD, your God, teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the way you should go. (Isaiah 48:17-19)

TEACH YOU AND LEAD YOU: God gave each of us the gift of free will. We have the freedom to make our own decisions, choose our own paths. The prophet Isaiah, speaking for God, said: I, the LORD, your God, teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the way you should go.

Notice he does not say, I command you or I force you. He could have – He is God after all. Instead, he granted us of us the gift of free will. He wanted us to have some buy in on our decisions, some ‘skin in the game’ when it came to the choices we make.

He didn’t leave us to flounder, however. I, the LORD, your God, teach you = I sent you the prophets to speak for me, to teach you and warn you and encourage you.

I, the LORD, your God…lead you on the way you should go = I sent you my Son, Jesus, to be an example to you, to show you how to live your lives and serve others and love as I love.

So, while God does not command us or force us, he does give us beautiful teachings and clear examples of the type of life he wishes us to live – a life that will bring us joy and lead us to eternal life.

We must choose.
